Chapter 1

Lying in bed one night next to my wife, Andrea, I thought about our son who was dying of cancer.

She turned so she was facing me. "Nick, he's only two, he knows life isn't supposed to be like this. It's not fair."

Our son Cameron had been a real blessing to us. He was so little but full of energy like me. Lately he'd been getting worse… he'd been diagnosed with cancer when he was a little bit more then one.The diagnosis had hit us like nothing else…our only little boy. Soon headlines hit every magazine. It scared him. And Andrea. Nothing like this had ever happened to me, I didn't know what to do. But for the sake of my wife and baby I showed all the strength I possibly could.

I took Andrea's hand and looked in her eyes. "Everything will be fine. We've worked through everything together. I understand that Cameron has cancer but he's doing better then the doctors thought he would. Doctor Thompson said he might be going into remission. We've just got to let him know we love him. Meanwhile, I don't want you to worry too much in order to keep our coming baby healthy. Go to sleep." I kissed her forehead and I drifted off into a light sleep but I knew Andrea was worrying beside me. I rolled over and put my arm around her waist and sleepily stroked her hair. I did my best to stay awake until she slept. Soon, my devotion was rewarded. Andrea's body relaxed and her soft breathing filled the room. Slowly my body relaxed too and we both slept soundly next to each other.

The next morning Cameron jumped on the bed. " Mommy! Daddy! Wake up! Morning!" sleepily, I sat up. Andrea giggled and pulled Cameron closer to her for a hug. She'd always been good with kids.

" Where's baby? She asked Cameron. He giggled and pointed to Andrea's huge stomach. "When's baby gonna be here?" Andrea asked.

"In two months…Cameron's gonna be old!" all of us laughed. But in all reality it was true. Cameron was getting old. Older…you usually think like my grandma but Cameron was living, but only, the doctors thought, until he was four or five.

“ Mamma, let’s get up! I’m hungry!” Andrea laughed. Inside I knew she was relived that he was hungry. It was a good sign. She pulled Cameron closer and gave him a hug. Cameron giggled.

“Now scoot so mommy and daddy can get dressed. Cameron nodded and obediently climbed out of our bed and closed the door on the way out. Andrea climbed out of bed and went to turn the shower on. She peaked out of the bathroom door. “ Nicky could you hand me my shirt and pants please?” she gave me the puppy face.

I grinned and handed Andrea her clothes. I kissed her. “We’ve got one good little boy.” She nodded and closed the door. I laughed and shook me head. Walking over to the dresser I grabbed out some clothes and stripped down to my boxers. I pulled my shirt over my head just as Andrea came out of the bathroom.

Mommy?” I heard Cameron call through the door.

“Yeah baby?” she asked.

“ I threw up all over the carpet.” He answered shyly.

“It’s ok baby,” she turned to me “can you get that?”

I sighed and pulled my pants on but soon was collapsed on the bad in pain. Unfortunately I had caught myself in my zipper.

Andrea began to laugh and she hit me with a pillow. “you’re too weird! Now go help your son quick!”
